The second and final Test between India and West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium has started on a good note. India finished the first day at 318 for 2. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a brilliant century.
After winning the coin toss for the first time in his seven-Test captaincy, Shubman Gill decided to bat. The decision paid off handsomely.
It was a good day for young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. The 23-year-old showed composure and skill and remained unbeaten on 173 at the end of the day’s play. Yashasvi Jaiswal fluent stroke play underpinned India’s strong performance.
Jaiswal’s century was his seventh in the longest format of the game, a remarkable feat that puts him second only to Sachin Tendulkar in terms of most centuries, with 24 Test centuries. Yashasvi Jaiswal also became the fastest Indian to complete 3,000 international runs in just 49 matches.
india vs west indies yashasvi jaiswal and Sai Sudarshan partnership
Jaiswal’s partnership with Sai Sudarshan was the highlight of the day. The two left-handers frustrated the West Indies bowling with a 193-run stand for the second wicket. Sudarshan, impressed by his maturity, scored a career-high 87 runs and missed his maiden Test century when he was dismissed by Jomel Warrick.
The second wicket to fall was that of KL Rahul, who was dismissed for 38 off a fast-turning delivery by Jomel Warrick. Warrick was the only West Indies bowler to take both wickets.
India, who won the first Test in Ahmedabad by an innings and 140 runs, fielded an unchanged team. West Indies made two changes to their side, bringing in Tevin Imlach and Anderson Phillip for Brandon King and Johan Lane.
Jaiswal was on 173 and captain Shubman Gill was on 20 when play was stopped. On the second day, India will look to consolidate their dominance as they strive for a clean sweep in the two-match series.
